Dear Friends, Family, Loyal Fans, and Music Industry Constituents,

On March 25, Garry Shider of Parliament Funkadelic, was rushed to the hospital after experiencing stroke like symptoms at his home in Maryland.

Garry was hospitalized in the intensive care unit at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC, where he was diagnosed with brain and lung cancer.

The legendary Garry “Star Child” Shider has been the premier vocalist, guitarist, writer and arranger for Parliament Funkadelic for forty years. He has toured the world countless times over, and has written such Funk classic hits as “Atomic Dog” and “One Nation Under a Groove”. Throughout his incredible career, Garry has delivered his own brand of Funk and unique style, night after night, never disappointing his audiences and always leaving them wanting more.

• Lauren Davies is Director of Gallery Programs at Kala Art Insititute, overseeing and curating exhibitions and residency projects.
• Carrie Lederer, Curator of Exhibitions and Programs at Bedford Gallery, has directed programs and exhibitions at the Bedford for the past 15 years.
Both are also successful practicing artists.

[M] Rock n’ Roll Camp for Girls Los Angeles - Now Enrolling Campers and Recruiting Volunteers for Summer Camp 2010!

Non-profit music education and social justice organization Rock n’ Roll Camp for Girls Los Angeles is now enrolling campers and recruiting volunteers for its 2010 Summer Camp session, taking place July 26-31, 2010 at Immaculate Conception School in downtown Los Angeles. Applications are available now, HERE.

At Summer Camp, women and girls will gather together to crank it up and kick out the jams for one week full of musical creation and inspiration. Guided by female mentors and musicians, girls ages 8-17 form bands, learn the fundamentals of playing an instrument (guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, DJ/turntables), write an original song, and perform live at a reputable music venue in L.A. Guest artists perform at lunch every day and engage in a Q&A with the girls, and daily workshops include screen-printing, songwriting, self-defense and more.

[MM] Help Save El Indio's Milonga from Being Shutdown After 20 Years!

Our friend Pedro (also known as El Indio) has been running the legendary milonga at the Plaza Dorrego in San Telmo for many years. You may remember him dancing with Mariana Dragone, or featured in National Geographics, etc. Every Sunday for now 20 years El Indio has shared his passion for Tango with many. The milonga is free, it's a great place to meet, it's actually an attraction in itself bringing lots of people to nearby businesses, and yet, some adjacent restaurants are causing trouble.

We need your help to keep the milonga going. Here's a statement from supporters of the milonga.

[MM] Action Alert: Elimination of Los Angeles, CA, USA Non-Profit Lease Program!

The City of Los Angeles is considering elimination of the Non-Profit Lease Program which provides leases for $1.00 per year to many community organizations.

As an organization without its own space, SASSAS relies on in kind donations of space from organizations such as Beyond Baroque and the Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock who are a part of this program. If this program is eliminated it will have a catastrophic ripple effect on SASSAS's programming and budget.

Nick Kello was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and spent his childhood and later years traveling and living in diverse corners of the globe, including Boston, Montreal, Rio De Janeiro, and São Paulo. This global upbringing afforded him both a fluency in the diverse languages in which he sings his music (Portuguese, English, Spanish, and French) as well as a natural exposure to a wide variety of musical tastes and styles. Nick earned a degree in Philosophy and Literature from Boston College, as well as a degree in Musical Performance for the Guitar from California Institute of the Arts, where he studied with Miroslav Tadic, Stuart Fox, and Larry Koonse.

Anna Belaya (Voznyuk) graduated the Art University in fashion design from Omsk City, Russian Federation in 2005. With her Russian mentality she creates costumes in bright and contrasting colors. She uses European techniques of sewing and cutting that creates a unique look in her creative designs.

As a "green designer", Anna doesn't work with natural fur or leather. She works with synthetic fabrics and sometimes non-fabric materials like paper, plastics, glass, Christmas lights, etc. in-order to create her fantastic worlds of fashion. Her collections are created for theatrical performances that look out of this world. They can envoke military women from ancient times, aliens from Mars, mystery angels, or wicked demons.

[MM] Spencer Tunick Installations: Sign-Up!

Spencer Tunick (born January 1, 1967) is an American artist. He is best known for his installations that feature large numbers of nude people posed in artistic formations. These installations are often situated in urban locations throughout the world, although he has also has done some "Beyond The City" woodland and beach installations and still does individuals and small groups occasionally. Tunick is the subject of three HBO documentaries, Naked States, Naked World, and Positively Naked. His models are volunteers who receive a limited edition photo as a reward.
