Her 5 critically acclaimed CDs have won numerous “Best of the Year” awards and landed her in the DownBeat polls. Shank’s inventive phrasing and in-the-moment ensemble interplay, coupled with the rhythmic and harmonic innovations, “virtuosity and sheer musical wit” (Time magazine) of Grammy-nominated pianist Geoffrey Keezer, will make this a unique musical event. Their previous collaboration, along with bassist Hamilton Price and drummer Zach Harmon, received a rave review in Jazz Times.

When Julian Lage emerged on the music scene 13 years ago, the young San Francisco Bay Area-based musician was not only deemed a guitar-playing prodigy, but he was also offered record deals on numerous occasions. Since then he has played on two Grammy-nominated albums with Nnenna Freelon and Taylor Eigsti, and has received recognition from musical luminaries including Herbie Hancock and Béla Fleck. Julian recently released his debut album, Sounding Point, on EmArcy Records. It was nominated for a Grammy Award for the Best Contemporary Jazz Album of 2009. “I’ve been in a position where I could have recorded an album when I was younger (he’s now 21) but was never in a rush.”

Mel Martin made a commitment to forming a swinging, “in-your-face”, volatile big band in the early 90’s. The current repertoire of the his All-Star Big Band consists of new arrangements of many standards in addition to music by Count Basie, Benny Carter, Jimmy Heath, Joe Henderson, Gerry Mulligan plus new arrangements of Mel’s original compositions. Jamie Davis holds a position amongst the pantheon of great male vocalists with a full deep baritone voice that has been paired with some of the world’s most famous talent. He performed with the BBC’s 64 piece Orchestra and was lead vocalist with The Count Basie Orchestra for three years. “Having all that sound behind you is just amazing. You’ve got to ride that current.”

Performing Schuman’s compositions for piano quartet, the first romantic composer to pair the piano with the string quartet.

Mack McCray, piano: internationally acclaimed founder of Zephyr Festival in Courmayeur, Italy, he is also Chairman of the Piano Department of the SF Conservatory of Music.

Jennifer Culp, cello: former member of the Grammy-winning Kronos Quartet, her credits include cellist with the Philadelphia String Quartet and SF Opera Orchestra, among many others. Currently a member of the Feinsmith Quartet.

Bettina Mussumeli, violin: former co-concertmaster and violin soloist "I Solisti Venetia" of Italy, Bettina is currently the first violinist of the Ives Quartet and Professor of Violin at the SF Conservatory of Music.

Jodi Levitz, viola: was the Principal Viola and Soloist with “I Solisti Veneti”, and performed and recorded with them for 12 years. She is currently the violist of the San Francisco String Trio and Professor of Viola and Chamber Music at the SF Conservatory of Music.

David Liebman - soprano saxophone.
Vic Juris - acoustic and electric guitar.
Tony Marino - acoustic bass.

Considered a renaissance man in contemporary music with a career stretching over forty years, Liebman is “among the most important saxophonists in contemporary music . . . a leader and artist of integrity and independent direction. (Leonard Feather – Downbeat). He has played with many of the masters; authored books, recorded as a leader in styles ranging from classical to rock to free jazz; founded the Int’l. Ass’n. of Schools of Jazz; is a multiple Grammy nominee; an inductee into the International Association of Jazz Educator's Hall of Fame; the recipient of an Honorary Doctorate from the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland, as well as the Order of Arts and Letters from the French government, and has to his credit over 100 recordings as a leader/co-leader. This is a tight working group. A necessary component of his artistic life, David Liebman has continued to pursue his goal of employing a steady working group with a distinct body of music.
