Latin music star Lila Downs is the very embodiment of modern-day multiculturalism—the daughter of a Mixtec-Indian singer and a Scottish-American cinematographer/painter, raised in southern Mexico’s Sierra Madre mountains and in Minnesota. This singularly eclectic background is mirrored in her music, an ever-shifting and always surprising blend of contemporary Mexican and native Mesoamerican styles and the cosmopolitan sounds of Jamaican reggae, East Indian classical music, ’60s R&B, and even Mississippi Delta blues—all sung in a Rosetta Stone array of Spanish, Mixtec, Maya, English, and still other languages. But the most wide-ranging marvel of all is her voice, gliding effortlessly through the octaves from a deep rasp to an ethereal falsetto, and enchanting audiences worldwide.
